Health, Safety & Wellbeing

Coastal Projects treats health, safety and wellbeing as a core business function. We operate under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA) and supporting regulations, with systems designed to identify and control risk, engage workers, and continuously improve performance.

Tōtika pre-qualification (CHASNZ) — Achieved

We are Tōtika pre-qualified under the CHASNZ industry scheme, providing clients with independent assurance that our health and safety management system meets a recognised national standard for the construction sector. Tōtika streamlines pre-qualification across NZ and recognises equivalent certifications where applicable.

Governance & Leadership

  • Directors and senior leaders set HSW objectives, review performance quarterly, and resource improvements.
  • Officers discharge due-diligence duties through audits, site walks, and leading indicator reviews (training coverage, close-call reporting, corrective-action closure).

Planning & Risk Management

  • Pre-construction risk reviews: design-stage risk workshops, construction methodology risk registers, and critical-risk controls (excavations, working at height, temporary works, mobile plant).
  • SSSP on every site: Site-specific Safety Plans developed with our PCBU partners outline hazards, controls, inductions, emergency plans, subcontractor interfaces, and monitoring.
  • Task-specific SWMS/JSA/TA are used for higher-risk activities and permits (hot works, confined spaces, live services).

Competency, Induction & Engagement

  • Role-based training matrices cover legal awareness, first aid, height/fall protection, plant operations, temporary traffic management, and asbestos awareness (as applicable).
  • ConstructSafe is used to verify worker H&S competency; all personnel complete site inductions and toolbox talks, with daily pre-start risk assessments.

Contractor & Supplier Management

  • Pre-engagement checks align with Tōtika core criteria (policies, risk management, incident processes, worker engagement).
  • Subcontractors are onboarded through SSSP, inducted to site rules and critical controls, and monitored via inspections and performance reviews.

Operational Control & Safe Work Methods

  • Documented procedures for excavation, lifting, temporary works, height work, electrical isolation/LOTO, silica and dust, noise, manual handling, and traffic/pedestrian separation.
  • Mandatory PPE standards; calibrated plant/equipment and certified lifting gear.
  • Environmental controls integrated (sediment, spill response, waste and noise).

Incident Management & Learning

  • Immediate notification and medical response procedures; notifiable events managed per HSWA.
  • Root-cause investigations, corrective actions tracked to closure, and learnings shared across projects.

Wellbeing & Fitness for Work

  • Drug & alcohol policy (pre-employment, post-incident, and reasonable-cause testing).
  • Fatigue, mental health and psychosocial risk controls; access to support resources.
